S-curve

S-curve in the technology Innovation space refers to the growth dynamics of technology and innovation. Both technologies and innovations around them begin the journey in the embryonic form. At the early stage, they face uncertainty in their growth prospects. Some of them show high amenability to the growth of getting better and also cheaper. To capitalize on this prospect, competition starts picking up in pouring R&D investment and rolling out innovations. Hence, both technologies and innovations enter into the ramping up phase. In course of time, progress keeps slowing down, due to the natural effect of diminishing return, leading to maturity. However, S-curve is an abstraction of the life cycle of technology innovation. In reality, there will be many variations.
